As usual, it has been a crazy couple months. Loving the new job, loving the sf bay area, and loving the people out here. Just went to the Massiveblack conceptart workshop out here, it was awesome not to fly across the country to attend. It has been 7 years since I went to the first one is SF. Crazy. I always get something new out of it and it is great meeting some awesome people.

Did this sketch after I got home from the workshop and then I slept for 2 days.

This is something I did while working for Netdevil/Gazillion Entertainment a couple years ago. I saw it is being used as a loading screen now. I will post more as it becomes available.

One of the hardest parts of painting to me is going from a quick sketch to a final piece and keeping any kind of life in it. It is why half my oil paintings are still drippy with turps and my harddrive is full of stuff I will never tighten up. This was a lunch sketch that I tried to bring around to a more final state. I will get it there someday

An activity on cghub was to redesign something from star wars. I always liked the simple design of the tusken raiders and decided to sketch up my version.

Lastly, another piece in the ongoing saga of molly the cat. When we adopted her all we were told was that she was found under a bridge. This is my interpretation of her world at that time.

First time for everything

I knew it was going to be an interesting year when 2011 rolled around. So far it has included a 1,300 mile move to the west coast, putting out a game that I worked on for over 2 years, a cat that runs my life, and now moving on to a new job after 3 years with the old one. It was a great ride, I am grateful for all I learned and the people I met and worked with. Lots of memories. It is just crazy what can happen in a year.

With all this transition, I have taken some time off and am exploring the bay area. I will have some drawings and paintings from the last week soon. For now I have a compilation of before bed sketches from a couple weeks ago and some studies.

These are two studies that I did on my first day off from the old job. I really started to dislike how "digital" my work was becoming. It has a lot to do with needing to get things done quickly on the job and depending on photoshop tricks to carry some of the load. These were approached much more traditionally and am trying to drill that back into my head.

I am working on a couple pieces with this in mind, hopefully will share those later this week.

One week I lived in Colorado and the next week I am living in California. Things became a little bit uprooted and transplanted but now that things are getting settled out here I hope to get back in the groove of updating.

I have hoped to live on the west coast as long as I can remember and after taking out earthquake insurance, I am extremely excited to be out here. Over the weekend we checked out the Palace of Fine Arts. The scale of it is just incredible.

To make sure there is some artwork, this is something I am hoping to get some time to bring to final. It is part of a side project I am working on with an old friend of mine.

first post of an interesting year

To start things off I have to say it is going to be a fun year. Lots of ideas floating around and resolutions to be made whole. The most interesting thing to kick off so far has been the game I have been working on for 2 years or so is slowly making its way out seclusion. It has been an intense ride with many ups and downs but I am proud of what we have created and can also honestly say you can't move an inch in the game without seeing something I had my hand in. Closed Beta started today!

On another note, since I have been so busy with work for the last couple months I thought I would share a couple things I wouldn't normally show. At work, each new tileset and environment we create has a pretty strict color palette and defined lighting situation. It gets so ingrained in my head that it becomes like math and the creative color solutions run away, so most nights during the week I will pull up an old master painting, a film still, or other such thing, and do series of 5-10 minute color studies followed by a couple with no ref.

I know I can render something to death but this frees me up to new palettes and solutions, I get to mess with new brushes and it really re-energizes me to see things differently. I couldn't care less if they are good or not it is just new information to work with.

Then there are other times throughout the year where I am working on something and I get stuck or frustrated and I created a folder of studies. This is a small selection of sketches I did to either loosen up or a study I did to help myself with something I didn't understand. There are a lot more where this came from and it is interesting for me to see what I was needing to see or sketch at the time.

This was a piece done for the ol' artorder blog, they were running a competition that was supposed to show a character with a lantern stuck in a dungeon. That is what spawned the idea for this poor s.o.b. The poor guy has a knife pieced together with rope and some of the crappiest gear that dungeons and dragons has ever seen. I would re-roll.

Anyway, he has just realized he has passed this same spot about 50 times and might never make his way out of the labyrinth.

I have never really posted process work so here was some of the process for this one.

This is the junky greyscale I did that got across the elements I would want in the final. un-badass rogue being towered over by a deep cavernous abandoned underground keep.

keep it loose and then lower the opacity and do a tighter line drawing that more defined the character and structures. I always want to jump to throwing around color and making a mess but this step is important. I don't like getting too tight or I start depending on the lines rather than the shapes at some point.

It isn't exactly a new year but I am getting an early jump on things for 2011. I was so sick of looking at the old blog, or my old websites where everything was dark, that I decided to clean up a little bit. I got depressed every time I looked at them.

I will be messing around with stuff and making a new header but for now this feels much better.

This little painting is an homage to a piece I did back in art school that I always wanted to make into a flash game, it had these floating bricks and little characters fishing them out and piling them up. I would link to it, but it is old and bad. It's also influenced by a game I saw a couple weeks ago called bastion that looks incredible and I can't wait to play it!

Over at the polycount forum there is a little competition to create a sidescroller level and get it into a game engine. I am working up some concepts for an oppressive industrial world where you attack floating machines. I will be teaming up with a friend at work to get this thing working. I am doing some work inside the Unreal Engine and I am trying to keep things based on primitive shapes in case I have to model anything.

This was a piece for the ol' artorder blog. I caught wind of it a bit late but had to do something for it. This is a Krampus, and according to legend he is a demon that comes out to punish the bad children while Saint Nicholas gives gifts to good children. He's not making it out of town without a fight though.

This is another warm up study, this time of some Cambodian ruins, I think part of Angkor Wat. I was thinking of taking a little trip to either Cambodia or Peru in the next year. We will see, gonna figure it out by doing some studies.

I guess it got around that I am pretty well known for my public speaking. I have been invited to the Art Institute of Colorado to give the students there some info on the video game industry. I will be there with some other local concept artists and illustrators and really looking forward to giving my perspective on the industry and my experience so far. Hopefully people come loaded with questions, we have 2 hours to fill up.

Well, I am fresh back from my first business trip. I had a blast down in Dallas at the conceptart.org workshop. I got a lot out of it and feel recharged, but it is good to be back. Dallas was experiencing some "minor wind" when we came in to land and I got to experience quite the rollercoaster ride at 1,000 feet. On one drop coming around a bank things got a little hairy, the boyscout troop 3 rows up cheered and the little girl to my right got a little sick on the seat in front of her, it was intense. Once on the ground everything was great, I definitely miss Texas. It was good to be back for a bit. I snuck out of the workshop for a bit to grab a bite to eat with some of my old classmates from Ringling. We went to this place... it was great.

Lately after work I have had a hard time doing any work that takes too much thought. I decided I can keep up with doing studies, trying to do small color pieces to expand my normal palette that I would work on. These have been fun and I have a bunch more to toss up. This is a study of a Frederick Church landscape.

And here is a sketch from today, I have some ideas for how it will end up, lets see if it gets there.

First was at Dr. Sketchy's Austin where we got some beers, a free burlesque show and Megan won an itunes gift card. Then last night we got to the local art association that offers figure drawing. The model was pretty awesome.

This is a redesign for a book from the 60's called "Be Here Now." When I used to work at the bookstore in Stillwater, MN I would spend a lot of time looking at the crazy drawings that make up most of this book. I remember buying it for a lot of friends that Christmas and most of them got freaked out. It really is a strange book and this is my little homage to it.

Contains blood and some vague nudity. Just a small warning in case it matters.

Well, there was a little competition over at conceptart.org that I got involved with. The idea was to design and paint 100 creature thumbnails in 30 days. I think I underestimated the amount of work I got myself into, (especially while juggling other projects) but finished it on time. The strange themes were generated by the people running the contest and I tried my best to work within them.

I am glad to be done.

I woke up at the break of dawn today to go landscape painting over in Myakka state park. I saw my first alligator in the wild and got swarmed by lovebugs. I am looking forward to when it cools down a bit here to make landscape painting a bit more bearable, my northern blood boils above 78 degrees.

In other cool news, James Gurney of Dinotopia fame is coming to do a lecture/demo soon. He has an awesome blog here - http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/ Dinotopia was one of those books that affected every kid who saw it, just incredible stuff and should be a great lecture.

Here is another sketch from storyboard class, this poor kid's name is Gussett, he lives in a world with no vegetation. The planet became a desert before he was born and only rumours exist of flowers and plants. He wanders the land and collects scrap metal for his town, where his father is the King. Metal and cement are all that is left of the old world and metal is used to create the contraptions that enable people to be functional at all, for it seems that people of this world are occasionally born without the limbs necessary for basic survival.

As a personal project this semester I am going to try to paint all the panels from the section of the story that I storyboarded. I swear there is a happy ending to all this...

Well, our show, "Illest of Ill" has come and gone. It was such an awesome time, I am swamped with work now but will make a more complete post with more pictures later. Here are some pictures I got of my pieces in the show.

Another update on the run. Here are some photos I took of the apartment I am renting for the summer. It has worked out well and I have it set up with 3 sections. A painting studio, a drawing/digital painting cubicle, and the reading lounge. I split up my time between them. I am pretty sure now that there is a mouse or rat in here though and I don't have air conditioning. Every once in a while I will hear a little noise or some scurrying in the kitchen and I have to grab the beating stick. anyway...

(update) I wrote this draft 2 weeks ago and then lost internet access. In the interim I found out it wasn't a mouse or a rat in the kitchen (Though I am pretty sure there were some mice around, due to holes bitten out of boxes of food) but one night I was trying to finish up some paintings and I thought the mice were at it again. I gathered up pencils, pens, tape, a battery, etc. and when I heard the noise in the kitchen I would throw something in there and the noise would go away. I got so fed up with that process that I camped out on the kitchen counter and waited. I won't go into the details here but something was living in my stove/oven. It was either a huge bat or a camel spider. I fought the good fight and lost.

Back home now getting ready to head down to Florida.

It's been tough keeping this thing updated lately, but here is a small one. One is a sort of visual journalism type of piece. I spent a couple days drawing at the Selby gardens and took some photo reference and then painted these and compiled them.

I have to get some stuff scanned this week and will update then.

Well, New York was awesome and I have been busy since getting back, busy getting the high score in centipede on the local arcade machine. It's tough work but I got it done.

Lenny is a leprechaun and nobody knows what Bruce is. Together they ride along stealing all the pots of gold in the land. Using the gold they find they are able to run their "Rainbow maker 3000" custom model. It creates a fake rainbow so the other leprechauns go to the wrong place while Lenny and Bruce make off like bandits with the gold.

so the piece isn't quite done yet, I rushed the last parts and I haven't finished the rainbow maker 3000. I will get back on that this weekend. Now, I sleep.

Well my re-designed site is up and 99% of it actually works. check it out... www.accidentalabstract.com It is a huge download, but it is up and I can slowly start to fix things and update as needed. I am glad to have that done with.

In other news, I haven't got an electrical shock since I was in kindergarten and my class went to a farm for a field trip. They said "whatever you do, don't touch the top wire of the bull's pen." the first thing I did when I got over there was go grab it to see what was up. The rest of that day sucked. Anyway, just now in the last two weeks I have been shocked twice. One time out of a wall socket and just now I went to turn on a lamp in the living room and when I did, my hand was on some wires coming out the back. I have a dull tingly feeling in my arm up to my elbow and there is a tiny spot on my thumb that feels like it is on fire.
